Ein sich wandelndes rituelles Labor von Nathan Fuhr, basierend auf dem Game-Piece von John Zorn. Kuratiert unter dem Einfluss und im Geist von Alice Coltrane.

Mit ?Cobra? schuf der jüdisch-amerikanische Free-Jazz- und Avantgarde-Musiker und -Komponist John Zorn einen Klassiker der improvisierten Musik. Cobra, das bekannteste von Zorns so genannten Game-Pieces, ist keine Komposition im herkömmlichen Sinne, sondern ein System von Improvisationsanweisungen, aus dem sich immer wieder neu spontane Konzerte ergeben. Der Dirigent Nathan Fuhr lernte das System von Zorn selbst und entwickelte daraus seinen eigenen performativen Stil des Dirigierens, bei dem er sowohl synergetische Bewegungen und Gesten als auch Pappschilder mit Anweisungen zum Einsatz bringt. Fuhr stellt für jede Cobra Session eine All-Star-Band aus lokalen MusikerInnen zusammen. Der siebte teil der Serie fällt auf seinen 31-sten Geburtstag, kuratiert sich selbst: unter dem Einfluss und im Geist von Alice Coltrane ? "who wanted one thing, love in the band!" Nathan Fuhr wird in den Sophiensaelen an zwei Abenden eine Cobra-Session präsentieren, in der er neben Zorns berüchtigtem Klassiker auch seine Version von Improvisationskonzepten von Pauline Oliveros und Fred Frith einsetzen wird.

?Das ist Cobra, wie es sein sollte, aber selten gemacht wird, nicht als Demonstration eines Spielsystems oder als Huldigung seines legendären Verfassers, sondern im vollen Bewusstsein der unmittelbaren und einzigartigen Chemie und des interaktiven Potentials von mehreren kreativen Individuen in einem Raum; Cobra als Sprache, durch die intensive Gruppendynamik in einen fokussierten Energiefluss gebracht werden kann. Es gibt eine soziale Alchemie, die hier wirkt, weil alle Beteiligten erstklassige MusikerInnenpersönlichkeiten ganz verschiedener lokaler Szenen sind, die sich sonst nie gemeinsam in einem Raum wiedergefunden hätten.? An evolving ritual-laboratory by Nathan Fuhr based on an improvisation game-piece by John Zorn.

With Cobra, the Judo-American Jazz and Avant-garde musician and composer John Zorn, created an infamous classic of improvised music. Cobra is not a fixed composition but a complex system of instructions on colored signs, delivered to (or requested by) the musicians. The conductor Nathan Fuhr has learned the game-piece from Zorn himself and has put together several Berlin Cobra sessions in collaboration with different curators (who select the other 10-12 musicians). This seventh edition of the series falls on his 31st birthday and is self-curated (under the influence of Alice Coltrane, "who wanted one thing, love in the band!"), and will also welcome Fuhr's realizations of improvisation concepts by Pauline Oliveros and Fred Frith, as well as more physicalized, subtle, and intuitive "conductions" using his gestural language.

?This is Cobra as it should be but rarely is; not as a demonstration of a game system or a representation of its legendary creator, but fully present and recognizing the immediate unique chemistry and latent interactive potential of diverse creative individuals assembled on the stage, using Cobra as a language through which intensely energized group dynamics are guided into a single, focused synergized flow. There is a certain social alchemy at work here in the way Nathan Fuhr brings these people together, in that these are all first-class musical personalities from different respective scenes who otherwise might never be found in the same room together.?
