Every new year, the Tanztage Berlin is not only the city's very first festival, it has also established itself nationally and internationally as an important platform for emerging dance artists since its founding in 1996. The next edition of Tanztage Berlin will once again take place under the artistic direction of Mateusz Szymanówka. The festival is currently planned for 5-21 January 2023 - however, the form as well as the exact date will depend on the constant reassessment of the pandemic. The festival offers emerging dance artists based in Berlin a framework for their new productions and revivals. The programme of the last two editions can be found at: https://tanztage-berlin.sophiensaele.com.
Inspired by mythology and astrology, four dancers perform intense solos to the sound of DJ and Berghain resident Fiedel! In their rebellious, almost sacrificial dances, they channel otherworldly forces and invoke the figure of a Sacred Warrior – from Chiron, the centaur, to other rebellious, warrior and guardian goddesses. But as much as the dancers exude a sheer force of will and uncompromising boldness, they also uncover unutterable wounds. In Greek mythology, Chiron was half-man and half-horse, injured by a poisoned arrow that left a never-healing wound. In astrology, Chiron is therefore also known as "the wounded healer" and represents both our deepest wounds and our ability to heal, individually and collectively. Until 2027, Chiron is in the astrological sign Aries, which also represents the warrior in us. These mythical images and stories form the symbolic and poetic framework of WARRIORS: CHIRON IN ARIES, RECITAL #1, which also makes the contradictions artistically visible on stage, in which choreographer Frédéric Gies lets the precisely choreographed solos meet almost expressionistic group dances.
Frédéric Gies is a dancer and choreographer. Between clockwork composition and the intensities and chaos generated by dancing bodies surrendering to the desires and forces that traverse them, their dance pieces bring to the forefront the capacity of dance to speak without having to demonstrate or represent. Drawing from their former training in ballet, their encounter with specific trends of contemporary dance at the beginning of the 90s, their dance floor experiences in techno clubs and raves and their study of somatic practices, they approach forms as possibilities rather than constraints.
