Age is just a number - nevertheless, we can't get around aging. In the midst of debates about climate change, identity politics and body images, it is time to renegotiate long outdated generational contracts. Thus, not only the recent pandemic has demonstrated that questions about responsibilities and solidarity have to be asked again. The performance festival COMING OF AGE, which will take place from September 15 to November 7 at the Sophiensæle, is dedicated to various aspects of aging in society - and looks at the different challenges of a phenomenon that affects us all.

The theatrical songwriter Bernadette La Hengst embarks together with her 16-year-old daughter and the audience on a musical journey through time to the stations of her mother's life between Silesia, the GDR, Lebanon and the FRG. For this project, La Hengst draws on her research and discussions of the past years, in which she went in search of traces of her mother. As a child, her mother was a refugee twice, from Silesia to the GDR to North Rhine-Westphalia. In the 1960s, she lived in Lebanon and Syria for a while. Mutter**Land builds a bridge to the current handling of flight and displacement: staged dialogues and vocal duets between stage and film, between mother and daughter, rituals performed with the audience and La Hengst's songs oscillate from the micro to the macro cosmos of a society in which migration is a cultural foundation.
