Malaria – On the (ideological) history of a disease and its eradication

Gin Tonic and impregnated mosquito nets, genetically modified mosquitoes or a new type of sandal: the mission to eradicate malaria is as old as colonialism. Nevertheless, up to one million people die every year from the consequences of a mosquito bite. Inspired by discussions about disease, faith and medicine, Fear + Fever is investigating the unequal world of malaria in a theatre science lab. Behind the deceptive safety of the mosquito net, clinical studies oscillate with historical reenactments, scientific choreographies and TED talks. The audience is confronted with the conflicting politics of malaria research and treatment: after being infected, how would you like to be cured, by the latest drug from Switzerland, Chinese herbal tea or a traditional Tanzanian healing ritual? Two performers navigate through the economies of science and the WHO and comment on the millennium race between malaria pathogens, humans and mosquitoes. Is the end in sight or will we have to learn to live with malaria again in Europe?

Flinn Works transforms documentary and personal material to a multiperspective and emotional theatre experience, with a commitment to post-colonial and feminist topics and in-depth research. Among their recents works presented at Sophiensæle are Kosa la Vita - Kriegsverbrechen (2018) and Global Belly (2017).

Asedeva (Art for Social and Economic Development in Africa) is an NGO in Dar es Salaam that supports the creative analysis of Tanzanian social issues in the field of the performing arts.
