Due to the current pandemic situation, the 30th edition of the Tanztage Berlin will start as an online program from January 7 to 16. All planned live performances will then be made up for in spring 2021.
The film showdown AV by choreographer Judith Förster and filmmaker Stella Horta will kick off the festival on January 7. Clay AD will present the first digital premiere of the festival on January 15 with the performance Indication of Spring at the End of Time. We also invite you to an online Zukunftswerkstatt – a series of discussions about work culture and mental health, organized in cooperation with the ZTB (Zeitgenössischer Tanz Berlin) association. Pedro Marum will also curate an online format focusing on new artistic practices of care in club culture. In addition to this, the festival presents the first three episodes of its podcast, which was prepared in collaboration with the queer-feminist rave collective LECKEN.

This revival of TONIGHT takes place online. Because time has a very different quality on screen than on stage, and because the logic of video is different to the logic of theater, Melanie Jame Wolf has reimagined this version of TONIGHT as a film. In this sense, it is a second edition of the work. Offering a fresh take to both those who are familiar with TONIGHT, and those new to the work and the artist.

          As a musical-performative silent film theater, Johannes Müller/Philine Rinnert listen to historical sites on the outskirts of Berlin and their history, which still echo today.

          The starting point of Nothing will be archived oder Die Herrin der Welt is the forgotten film city of Woltersdorf. It was here in 1920 that director and producer Joe May shot the eight-part monumental film series Die Herrin der Welt (The Mistress of the World), the most expensive German film production to date and one of the first major series – a genre that continues to shape cinema today. In the remains of the film city, sediments of German history lie on top of and next to each other: colonial history can be read from them just as much as the history of the Weimar Republic and the rise of National Socialism, which finally forced Joe May to leave Germany. The layers overlap and overwrite each other again and again through the various political systems.
          In an impossible cinematic research on the periphery of Berlin, Johannes Müller, Philine Rinnert and filmmaker Manuel Kinzer search for the remains of this lost cinematic history and place them in a context with other (political) spectacles staged in locations close to Berlin. In collaboration with composer Paul Frick – a member of the techno formation Brandt Brauer Frick – and an ensemble of performers and instrumentalists, they combine the resulting visual material to create a silent movie theater about the scenes of German history. Are the relics we see and hear really gone?

          The film lasts 60 minutes and uses German spoken and sign language. It includes some very loud (techno) music. The video stream is as relaxed as your home environment: Make yourself comfortable and adjust the volume and brightness on your computer according to your wishes.           JOHANNES MÜLLER / PHILINE RINNERT develop music theater hybrids that focus on the past of opera, its effects and techniques, but which are also an archeology of the present, of entertainment and queer culture. Their work Reading Salomé was awarded the jury prize at the 2016 Favoriten Festival.
