Age is just a number – yet there is no getting around aging. In the midst of debates about the climate movement, identity politics, and body image, it is time to renegotiate long-established generational contracts. Not only has the recent pandemic history shown that questions of responsibility and solidarity need to be revisited.
The performance festival COMING OF AGE, which will take place from September 15 to November 7 at Sophiensæle, is dedicated to various facets of aging in society - and looks at the different challenges of a phenomenon that affects us all.

After experiences in the European deaf performance community, Rita Mazza now presents her first choreographic work at Sophiensæle. Entering the stage as a playground, she explores the combination of dance and sign language movements and creates a whole new form of visual poetry. She links rules of sign language such as hand shapes, facial expressions and ordinary movements with movement studies by Laban, with ballet and Visual Vernacular – an art form of sign language that is very popular in the deaf community. Some moments of the solo performance are also inspired by works by deaf poets of the 1980s, such as Clayton Valli's Dandelion and Robert Panara's poem On his Deafness. Dandelion II was created following a research residency of the network project Making a Difference at Sophiensæle.

Making a Difference is dedicated to building a self-empowered community of disabled and deaf artists within the Berlin dance scene. This network includes SOPHIENSÆLE, Tanzfabrik Berlin, Uferstudios, tanzfähig, Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin, TanzZeit, Diversity Arts Culture and Zeitgenössischer Tanz Berlin.

RITA MAZZA (* in Turin) was born deaf and worked in Italy, London and Berlin as an actress and performer. She played, among others, the leading role of Sarah in God's Forgotten Children at the Theater Artisti Associati Company in Italy. Rita Mazza is also the artistic director of the international Festival del Silenzio. She speaks Italian, German, French and International Sign Language. She lives in Berlin since 2010. After some experience as a theater and film actress in the Deaf community throughout Europe, she is currently working as a freelance artist on visual sign performances in Berlin.
