Age is just a number - nevertheless, we can't get around aging. In the midst of debates about climate change, identity politics and body images, it is time to renegotiate long outdated generational contracts. Thus, not only the recent pandemic has demonstrated that questions about responsibilities and solidarity have to be asked again. The performance festival COMING OF AGE, which will take place from September 15 to November 7 at the Sophiensæle, is dedicated to various aspects of aging in society - and looks at the different challenges of a phenomenon that affects us all.

Inflammations (Pandemic Edition) is a video work based on the performance Inflammations, which premiered at Sophiensæle in September 2019. With the support of NPN Stepping Out, a new video work with the added development of an artistically integrated sign language performance by the performer Athina Lange could be realized.

Inflammations deals with chronic pain and fatigue, as well as, the relief and sensuality that come with easing the symptoms. Starting from the question of what expectations we have of hyperfunctional bodies on stage and in everyday life, the performers demand a place for unstable bodies - with all their risks and potentials, in the artistic field as well as in society. Vulnerability becomes a catalyst for a new body, language and care economy.

Ania Nowak’s expanded choreographic practice approaches vulnerability and desire as ways towards reimagining what bodies and language can do. She develops formats such as live and video performance, performative exhibition and text. Nowak’s overall inquiry is into the political dimension of the body material and its immaterial aspects -affects, feelings and intuition- to think of new, embodied practices of care and companionship. www.anianowakanianowak.com
