The children Charlotte and Felix emerge from the sea and play as their dead parents on the beach. It's a ritual the two have been practicing for years. In memory of their parents' wild exuberance, they put sunscreen on their backs and tickle each other until they can hardly breathe. For brief moments, all sadness falls away from them. Again and again, however, the different needs of the two ten- and eleven-year-old siblings break into the game.

In her 1974 science fiction novel The Dispossessed, Ursula Le Guin describes an ambivalent social utopia that makes political ideas such as anarchism, socialism and capitalism tangible. HORIZON PROBLEMS is dedicated to this multi-layered scenario and makes it experienceable from a queer-feminist perspective with the means of contemporary dance. The bodies on stage challenge and nourish each other, play, and exploit – a microcosm of solos and imperfect unison.

Three dancers move through life and death, wonder and laughter, violence and fragility in a magical, grotesque realm.

I'm going to talk to you about pain. During the pandemic, Rachel Bagshaw and her artistic team adapted the stage performance The Shape of the Pain for the screen. This process resulted in the 18-minute BBC feature Where I Go. In an Artist Talk, part of Cripping the Pain on Zoom, director Rachel Bagshaw, performer Hannah McPake and sound designer Melanie Wilson show video clips from the original stage performance, talk about the process of creating the piece and how the film revisits the performance as a work of art. They also delve into the pain that informed the production's text and aesthetic, from the first rehearsal to the show's tour, and talk about the great importance of accessibility within the artistic process.
