***

We would like to formally and wholeheartedly apologize for the racist violence that took place in Ann Liv Young's performance Good Sherry, triggered by the performer herself.

Ann Liv Young as Sherry was invited to our Save your Soul Festival with the improvisational format Sherapy: Good Sherry, as her confrontational approach often enables her to intensely negotiate the field of tension between intimacy and publicity in the therapeutic field and to present the monstrous sides of the increasing fusion of therapy and pop culture in Western societies. In many cases, she makes it possible to experience power relations through the exaggeration of pathologizing attributions, thereby triggering important discussions. In this case, she clearly went too far with the practice of racist speech acts and in overstepping viewer boundaries. For this reason, we prematurely stopped the performance and declared it over.

We decided to show another version of the performance on the following day in order to continue the discussion on stage and in conversation with the audience – about the boundaries of violent action within the framework of theatre, about the boundaries between performer and role and under the condition – as agreed with Ann Liv Young prior to the show – that no racist language would be used. Following the performance, a moderated audience discussion was planned, to which we also invited the audience from the night before. Further discussion and reflection of the incident involving the public and above all involving those, against whom the attack was directed in particular, will follow.

We are aware that the work on the self is currently taking place in an explosive field of tension between normalization and empowerment and we also know that it takes place under very different circumstances depending on the color of one's skin. Various contributions to the festival reflect this particular issue and we would have preferred this debate to have been possible without discriminating against and causing hurt to marginalized viewers.
