We would like to invite you to our second online showing, happening in the frame of the residency program NEW TECHNIQUES. T.Will will give insight into his research into the interrelation of race, gender and melancholia. On May 15, on our website we will release a DJ set by MCMLXXXV and a dance video shot at Sophiensæle in collaboration with Nkisi, Thyago Sainte, Kévin F. E. Bonono and Lucas Leclere. On May 17th, T.Will and Nkisi will join the dance scholar Mariama Diagne (IKM - Department of Cultural Management and Gender Studies, Vienna) for an artist talk on Zoom.

“Trompoppies” is an Afrikaans word for “Drum Majorettes” who perform formation dance in uniform. During his residency T.Will has looked at one of the main choreographic elements of these dances – the precise hand gestures. Through morphing Trompoppies movements with melodramatic gestures of white divas and heavy gesticulation linked to the image of black male rap-stars, the choreographer explores the performative dimension of race and gender. The practice invites a new kind of sensitivity and softness into cultural representations of black masculinity, opening them up to queer readings.

With the residency program NEW TECHNIQUES, Sophiensæle aims to support dance makers who have not yet benefited from structural support. Until the end of 2021, every half-year one choreographer will participate in the residency with their artistic team for one month. In November/December 2020 Rodrigo Garcia Alves and Liz Rosenfeld explored questions of dying and queer care; in March 2021 T.Will has been researching the construction of black melancholia; in November 2021 Angela Alves will work around the topic of pleasure and visualization. Sophiensæle is among nine Berlin production houses participating in Residency Funding Dance, the pilot project of the Berlin's Senate Department for Culture and Europe.

T.Will is a performer and artist based between Berlin and Bern. In his artistic work he investigates the spectrum of rhythm and sound in relation to the body and its environment. T.Will studied at the PARTS School For Contemporary Dance in Brussels and at the University of the Arts Berne and has worked with Eszter Salamon, Jérôme Bel, Ligia Lewis, Trajal Harrell, Meg Stuart, Andros Zins-Browne, Alex Baczyński-Jenkins, Young girls reading group, Kat Valastur, PRICE and with the Cullberg Ballet under Deborah Hay and Jeftha Van Dinther.

Online-Installation

As part of PAF Introducing ..., the online-installation negotiates issues of class, gender and migration. In a subtle way it plays with conventions of fashion shows and refers to a current phenomenon in which so-called "workwear" finds its way into high fashion contexts. What's classy if you're rich, but trashy if you're poor?

JANUARY 07 to ∞

Dear Audience, dear Friends of Tanztage Berlin,

due to the ongoing uncertain planning situation, after three attempts of postponing the festival since January 2021, we have to inform you with a heavy heart that the event won’t take place this year. The twelve performances we were supposed to present received an invitation to participate in its next edition in January 2022. The artists received their production/revival grants, cancellation fees, and rehearsal space and dramaturgical support throughout the season. The works are finished and ready to be presented live. On July 1st, we are going to publish an open call for Tanztage Berlin 2022. We would like to thank the artists and our audience for their patience and understanding. We were very happy about the interest in our online kickoff of the Tanztage in January – you can still find the podcasts of the online kickoff on our website
