“It is better to follow the dark of the night
than to run after one’s life” you said,
to “follow the dark” can be
uncanny and unsettling,
for it resists the clarity of sight
forcing me to walk through the unknown
with no certainty.
In his works, Enad Marouf explores the fragmentary nature of memory, loss, and desire—their temporality and how they are embodied through poetry, gesture, and choreography. His group work And Now It is Night unfolds as a cruising dance between strangers—a dance of desire, but also of uncertainty and the unknown, a condition we all might endure.
The emergence and disappearance of movement, language, and sound, along with their fragmented interplay, invite the audience into a nonlinear story. Set within an architectural installation reminiscent of the old city of Damascus at night, the work becomes an unfolding meditation on grief, desire, memory, and uncertainty.
After the video installation Time of the Angel (2022) and the performances In My Hand a Word (2022) and HUNDSTAGE (2024), the Syrian-German performance and video artist Enad Marouf, winner of the Will Grohmann Prize 2023, returns to Sophiensæle with his work from K3 | Tanzplan Hamburg.
