Enad Marouf: ATHAR – Sophiensæle | Independent Theater in Berlin

Im Arabischen ist „athar“ das Wort für „Spur“ – und zugleich für „Ruine“. In dieser neuen Arbeit des Künstlers und Choreografen Enad Marouf bezeichnet „athar“ das, was bleibt: ein Zeichen dafür, dass etwas nicht mehr vollständig existiert, ein Fragment. Athar nimmt keine eindeutige Form an, es ist immer beides: Beweis einer Abwesenheit und Überrest eines Daseins.

Die Performance kehrt zurück in die 1960er und frühen 70er-Jahre – eine bedeutende Zeit des politischen Wandels und die Geburtsstunde von Befreiungsbewegungen und Studierendenprotesten rund um den Globus. In vielerlei Hinsicht ähnelt jene Epoche unserer Gegenwart. Doch die Unterschiede reichen tief. Damals schienen eine politische Vorstellungskraft und ein Versprechen von Zukunft noch möglich – etwas, das sich heute nur sehr schwer denken lässt. Die Performance möchte das Publikum und Künstler*innen im Theater als Kollektiv zusammenbringen: auf der Spur eines Moments von Zeit, Raum und Verlust – und zugleich der Möglichkeit, gemeinsam zu denken.

In simple words

“Athar” is Arabic for “trace” and “ruin.” Enad Marouf made a performance about this. It looks back to the 1960s. At that time, there were many protests, but also hope for the future. Today, this hope is often missing. The audience can come together and think together in the theatre.

Enad Marouf is a Syrian-German performance and video artist based in Berlin. His work focuses on body and text, using video, dance, language and installation as poetics and articulation of temporalities that influence our physicality and the way we narrate the world around us. He completed his Masters in Choreography and Performance at the Institute for Applied Theater Studies in Gießen/Frankfurt. His solo works and collaborations have been shown at Sophiensæle, the Athens Biennale, Kunstenfestivaldesarts Brussels, Centre culturel Francais de Damas, Babel Beirut, Tate Modern London, Art Institute of Chicago, Shedhalle Zurich, Kampnagel and Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin, among others. In 2023, he was awarded the prestigious Will Grohmann Prize.
