Salomé dances for her life, and we dance with her! At the fair she stomps from stall to stall, shuffling, tripping, dissolving, jumping, puffing, but always with abandon. Dancing her way through seven veils and kissing the severed head of John the Baptist. Tonight Salomé is much more than the fleeting supporting character from the Bible. Tonight she has outstanding concentration, a metaphysical imagination - and she carries a lot of love.
After their celebrated performance Notre Carmen, the Berlin music theatre collective Hauen und Stechen now present their version of Salomé. Loosely based on the opera by Richard Strauss and the text by Oscar Wilde, the performance alternates between music and dance - and is a film, a journey, a fair and a dance of death all in one. The motifs of desire, guilt and innocence, lust and refusal tell a story of cutting and stabbing beyond stereotypical gender attributions: Salomé is many. The performers walk with the audience through the seven veil attractions of the Salomé universe as if through a theatre of hell. The audience does not enter a spiritual retreat, a purified field. Rather, it is a pulsating battle zone in which the mundane meets the spiritual. And so it comes as it must: Whoever lifts one veil must die. Whoever lifts all of them dies later - and wiser.
