House stories #3 – Sophiensæle | Independent Theater in Berlin

As the double anniversary draws to a close, Sophiensæle looks back on its engagement with 120 years of the building’s history and 30 years of theater in Berlin’s independent scene: What gets told, what goes missing, what connects—and what stays invisible? From Yiddish theater and communist and anarchist movements to anticolonial resistance, Nazi forced labor, and experiences of the GDR and of migration, we ask how a theater can remember: in solidarity, in many voices, and without smoothing over contradictions—and what of all this still resonates today. Over soup, bread, and drinks, we invite our guests and our audience into conversation.

In simple words

Sophiensæle marks 120 years of building history and 30 years of independent theatre. Looking back, we ask: What do we know? What is missing? How can a theatre remember many stories? Join us for soup, bread, drinks and conversation.
