Hausführung – Sophiensæle | Independent Theater in Berlin
Hausführung

The Sophiensæle are located in the former craftsmen's club house, which has had an eventful history since its construction in 1904/1905.
With the use of the building by the Berlin labour movement, the most important political period for the house began. In the 10s and 20s of the last century the building was used as a meeting place for the revolutionary left, among others Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg spoke here. During the Nazi era, Dutch forced laborers worked in the Festsaal to produce Nazi leaflets, and in the GDR the Maxim Gorki Theater used the premises as workshops. In autumn 1996 the Sophiensæle were finally opened with the premiere of Sasha Waltz's successful piece Allee der Kosmonauten and has since developed into one of the most important production and performance venues for the liberal performing arts in the German-speaking world.
