Jillian Peña:
Polly Pocket
Polly Pocket
New York choreographer Jillian Peña nimbly navigates between capitalism and Marxism. Her latest epic dance drama, Polly Pocket, was inspired by the latter as well as by queer theory, psychoanalysis and ballet – a strange encounter with the self as a relationship toy. Polly Pocket is a spawn of capitalism: a miniature doll’s house made of plastic that folds like a shell and fits into any trouser pocket. Peña’s trio provides an insight into Alex and Andrew’s very private worlds of emotions and play while they court each other with presents. A captivatingly danced, uncannily cool trip through superficialities, abysses and soundtracks of post-Romantic doppelganger motifs – like contemporary revenants of E.T.A. Hoffmann and Coppelia.
