Johannes Müller / Philine Rinnert:
HERCULANUM

HERCULANUM
Félicien David’s opera Herculanum, which ended with the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, was a grand success in Paris in 1859, but then however it fell into oblivion. In their exhumation in four acts, Johannes Müller and Philine Rinnert search for relicts of this opera - then combine and reinvent them. They explore the Grand Opéra as a privileged representational medium for horror - they create scenarios and ask themselves, what catastrophe would work as a grand finale nowadays.

Johannes Müller / Philine Rinnert develop music theatre hybrids that focus on the past of opera, its effects and techniques, but which are also an archaeology of the present, of entertainment and queer culture. For their work Reading Salomé they received the jury prize at the Favoriten Festival 2016. In 2019 they were invited to Impulse Theater Festival with White Limozeen. www.johannesmueller.eu | www.philinerinnert.de
