PREMIERE

After two years of "quarantine", LUCKY TRIMMER is back – and the 28th edition, originally scheduled for Easter 2020, is finally ready to conquer the dance floor. As always, the format remains true to its penchant for creative diversity with that special something, bringing short pieces to the stage that demonstrate excellence and ingenuity. From over 300 international applicants, six artists have been selected to capture our hearts and minds in ten minutes or less with their unique and compelling narratives in dance and performance. What better way to celebrate the return of LUCKY TRIMMER than with a journey through the sensual world of contemplation? To be marveled at are the evocative power of hip-hop, a tribute to the present, tortured bodies, a longing for love and, last but not least, balloons in various shapes and sizes. A long-awaited spring awakening for all fearless dancing souls!

One Pigeon, One Bubble of Daniel Dominguez (DE) is the latest episode from the performance series Diarya of a Pigeon, in which the civilized world is viewed from a pigeon mask. Pigeons, in large part, lead ostracized lives. Hoping for eternal "homecoming," they are doomed to perpetual exclusion.

Bunker of Rebecca Margolick (CA/US) was created in response to Margolick's questions about the meaning of "Heimat" (similar to "home") and her belief that the body acts as an anchor or bunker when the mind is lost. The piece is a tribute to the present; a reminder of the importance of being grounded in unforgiving times; a connection and response to an ever-changing landscape.

Developed from discarded movement material for Vader - a production by the dance company Peeping Tom, of which Brandon Lagaert (BE) is a permanent member - Subdued is a riveting tale about a man who struggles with any task, no matter how small. Surrounded by objects that subdue him, tricking his mind and prompting his body to express overwhelming emotions, he moves uncontrollably, using words his mouth cannot articulate to say things his mind cannot comprehend.

Can one look completely change the course of an entire life? Can one encounter change an entire existence? Tutto Nel Segno Di Lei (At First Glance) of Roberta Ferrara/Equilibrio Dinamico Dance Company (IT) is inspired by the work Vita Nova (The New Life) by Dante Alighieri and his great love for Beatrice. In this duet, Roberta Ferrara approaches the poet's overwhelming and intense love for his muse, internalizing and transmitting it through a choreography of glances, elevations, falls, pursuits and never-finished embraces. Tutto Nel Segno Di Lei becomes a search that is never satisfied and yet filled with a longing that "moves the sun and the other stars".

In Sono Solo Tuo Padre Giovanni Leonarduzzi dedicates himself to the estranged relationship between a father and his son. Embedded in the violence, grief and guilt sometimes hidden behind the façade of normal family life, where feelings - nurtured or repressed - multiply under the emotional weight of secrets and guilt, the choreography explores the relationship between light, sound and movement. The piece portrays a man who, despite mistakes, begs for understanding, trying to move under the weight of emotional baggage and unfinished business. Only one thing is certain for him, it is the words "I love you".

The flow of Mélanie Gobet's (GB) BOOM is simple and impresses with precision. It reminds us of repetitive patterns in which we are trapped and which we find difficult to let go of. Mélanie Gobet repeats a simple action over and over again: the inflation of a latex balloon. Although the successive actions and reactions seem similar, they are never quite the same. Yet she continues the same gestures as if unaffected by the ever-changing, ever-new sequence of repetitive action.

The evening lasts about 75 minutes. A total of 6 short pieces will be shown. It is possible to leave the auditorium briefly between each piece and return. No language skills are required to understand the pieces. In both the first and last pieces of the evening, there will be a loud bang during the performance. Hearing protection is available at the entrance. Lucky Trimmer is family friendly and suitable for people of all ages. The audience area on the grandstand is seated. There are two wheelchair spaces and three beanbag seat that can be reserved by phone or booked via the online ticket shop or at the box office, if available. If you require specific seating of any other kind, please arrive 20-30 minutes prior to show time and approach our evening staff. BRANDON LAGAERT studied acting at SKI (Ghent, BE) and enrolled in the contemporary dance program at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp in 2012. He developed his distinctive style as an artist primarily while working for the internationally renowned dance theater company Peeping Tom as a multidisciplinary performer in the plays Moeder, Kind, Dido & Aeneas, and La Visita. He also collaborates with other companies, such as École de Théâtre Physique de Strasbourg, where he worked on experimental films. In 2016, Brandon received the BILL Award for Young Emerging Belgian Artists in the Visual Arts category. In an effort to further develop his artistic work, Brandon founded KAIHO. https://www.kai-ho.org/

EQUILIBRIO DINAMICO was founded in 2011 with the aim of creating collaborative creations in the field of contemporary dance and supporting experimental research. The company has presented choreographies by Roberta Ferrara (IT), Bert Uyttenhove (BE), Matthias Kass (DE), Clemént Bugnon (CH), Igor Kirov (MK), Jiri Pokorny (CZ) and Marco Blazquez (ES) on national and international stages. www.equilibriodinamico.org

ROBERTA FERRARA has been directing the dance company Equilibrio Dinamico and the educational project Ed Ensemble since 2014. She also teaches and choreographs for institutions and companies around the world, including Staatliche Ballettschule Berlin (DE), English National Ballet School (UK), Conservatório Internacional de Ballet and Dança (PT), Morikawa Dance Academy (JP), Elan Ballet (IN), Balletto di Siena (IT), Eko Dance Project (IT), ODT International (SG), Korea Ballet House (KR), Staatstheater Ballett Augsburg (DE), and Teatrul De Balet Sibiu (RO). In 2019, Roberta produced her first dance short film And Still She Gives for Experimental Film Virginia.

GIOVANNI GAVA LEONARDUZZI / COMPAGNIA BELLANDA Giovanni started b-boying in 1997. His search for the definition of the unique identity of this genre led to an exploration of alternative movements in dance theater and to the development of an "experimental" language, whose main characteristic is an abstracted version of the traditional breakdance vocabulary. Currently, Giovanni is pursuing two parallel paths as an independent breakdancer and as a dancer/choreographer for Compagnia Bellanda - a company he founded in 2012 with members of a previous breakdance crew. Compagnia Bellanda's fascination with contemporary dance, coupled with a desire to experience different perspectives, led the company members on a quest to find alternative ways to interpret breakdance movements.

MÉLANIE GOBET lives and works in Fribourg, Switzerland. She studied contemporary dance (The Place, UK), French literature (Université de Fribourg, CH), dance research (Université de Paris 8, FR) and performance art (HKB Bern, CH). As a contemporary artist, she sees herself on the border between contemporary dance, performance and visual art. She works with physicality interacting with the chosen material in a specific context. Her main interest is in serial actions, repetition, mathematical rigor, and the writing of the gesture and the object of the score. She has a preference for latex balloons, but is generally attracted to the ability of a material to change its state. Mélanie performs in both institutional and independent contexts, creating pieces of long and short duration and experimenting with her practice on stage, off stage and in situ. https://www.melaniegobet.ch/
