Auf Deutsch - in German

The chicken is an animal made up of an exterior and an interior. If you remove the exterior you are left with the interior. Take away the interior and you will see the soul.

Jean-Luc Godard’s 1962 film Vivre sa vie can be seen as a modern retelling of the story of Lulu, with which German playwright Frank Wedekind anticipated French twentieth-century philosophy and that Alban Berg turned into the very first dodecaphonic opera. The young director Franziska Kronfoth has created, on the basis of these works, an evening of theatrical stimulation both sensual and intellectual involving music and film and endless variations of this woman with the funny name – Lulu or Nana – performed by five magical women and four brave men.

The show evolved in stages, over the course of a year. The constituent episodes have been strung together to a thematic whole: Lulu and her siblings Don Giovanni and Tristan; Lulu’s childhood; Nana learns how to speak from a philosopher; death is sketched out in these young women’s fates, yet they meet it not as victims but as martyrs; the fragmentation of identity in social relations; the salvation of the deceased husbands; poetry in the post-emancipation era; beasts with a heavy cultural load.

One year after its premiere, LULU/NANA is performed at Sophiensæle again.
