Markus&Markus Theaterkollektiv:
Die Brieffreundschaft
Die Brieffreundschaft
After the performance on November 11, there will be a post-show discussion (in German) with Markus&Markus and the artistic director of Sophiensæle Franziska Werner in Hochzeitssaal.
Dear program readers, we are very happy to write to you today. In previous times we have built up pen-pal relationships with people who are in lifelong lockdown - in prison. Together with them we have worked on this production, to which we cordially invite you today. We have missed you. Best wishes and take care, your Markus&Markus Theaterkollektiv
Penthesilea, Judith, Clytemnestra, Medea, Lady Macbeth. Night after night, we let ourselves be sprinkled by their acts of violence enjoying the drama, murder and killing. If they were not trapped in Reclam books, they would probably be in prison. There, the Markus&Markus theater collective tracked down the - very real - protagonists of this evening for their new play and began to write them letters. The result is a pen-pal relationship with women who have been convicted of murder. In their inimitable form of documentary theater, which does not claim to be true to reality, Markus&Markus, together with their pen-pals, create an evening of theater that poses questions about humanity - and about second chances - in a new way.
The performance approximately 90 minutes without intermission. Knowledge of German written and spoken language is required for comprehension. The lighting situation in the auditorium is rather dark throughout. The play is suitable for an audience of 14 years and older. The audience area on the grandstand is seated. There are two wheelchair spaces and one beanbag seat that can be reserved by phone or booked via the online ticket shop, if available. Accessibility information is updated on an ongoing basis. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Gina Jeske at jeske@sophiensaele.com or 030 27 89 00 35.

MARKUS&MARKUS is a THEATERKOLLEKTIV founded in 2011 by students of scenic arts in Hildesheim. The group consists of Lara-Joy Bues, Katarina Eckold, Markus Schäfer and Markus Schmans. Together, the collective stands for its very own form of documentary theatre, passionate investigation and radical lack of perfection.
The works are characterised by intensive research, the results of which are captured on the video level and form an elementary component of the productions. However, the collective is not concerned with depicting a reality in documentary form and explaining the world - instead, the theatre context is decisive for accessing reality.
