Oil our scars, fill our bathtub with tears, let's celebrate our lust for life and get dressed up. Welcome to the ceremonial farewell ritual of my breasts, to a bittersweet new beginning!

In MASTECTOMY. a bittersweet farewell song, CHICKS* dedicate themselves to letting go of breasts and invite the audience to a bittersweet, interactive concert performance. They accompany Marietheres Jesse in the performance as they say goodbye to their own breasts. Together, CHICKS* develop a ceremonial, queer and tearful farewell ritual and an evening of discourse on the connections between gender, health and identity. Which different perspectives and experiences with mastectomies come together in our queer community, can give us support and care for each other? In a participatory performance format, the three performers invite the audience to accompany this process and be part of their temporary care community. Loss, the pain of parting and the excitement of welcoming the changed body, the new beginning, can coexist here in all their ambivalence. Both very personal experiences with breasts and the letting go of them, as well as cultural-historical and socio-political debates about health, gender, transitions, farewell and mourning culture are inscribed in the musical performance. It will be intimate, soft, challenging - and it will be cared for.

By playing the video, I agree to Soundcloud's privacy policy and thus also to the data transfer from Vimeo to the USA.

The performance addresses mastectomy in the context of being trans and transitioning, as well as cancer (prevention) and the associated illness, violent healthcare system, death and mourning. Furthermore, medical procedures and amputations are described in detail. The performers show their post-mastectomy torsos.

(Federal Association of Independent Performing Arts). Media partners: Missy MagazineSiegessäuletaz.

CHICKS* freies performancekollektiv unites diverse experts and interdisciplinary artists in the idea of a queerfeminist network. In their queer performances, they combine interactive and installative formats of encounters with an image theater of objects and atmospheres. In intensive aesthetic and content-related research processes, CHICKS* search for what they have in common in the realities of their lives, what drives them, what they want to get rid of, what they want to change. They question social constructions, especially those of gender, sexuality, sex and power, in order to develop performative alternatives and utopian gatherings. CHICKS* also give workshops, seminars and training courses in the areas of queer-feminist and sexual education using performative theater for young people and adults, professionals and amateurs.
