Since last spring, the ensemble matthaei & konsorten has been researching the omnipresent but invisible presence of the Baroque in today's Berlin. The artists appropriate and delve into this exciting epoch with personal stories that began four centuries ago. A film set between installation and surround theater now presents the results!

Berlin, born of swamp and named after it, began to develop its basic form in the 17th century, which still shapes the city today. Our clichés of the Baroque usually consist of stucco-decorated facades, symmetries of park design or the palatable display of splendor and opulence. The free ensemble around director Lukas Matthaei dives deeper into the conceptual, thought and life worlds of the early modern era and discovers its other sides: The beginning of colonial history, which still has an effect today, the politics of dances and social codes, the dirt of the city and the fear of death in the face of plague and war.

The performance Die Sumpfgeborene (The Swampborn) began in the late summer of 2020 with four so-called “test drills”, city traversals exploring baroque dross and collective raw materials of the imagination: From the Baustoffrecyclinghalle in Heinersdorf, to the Nikolaikirche in Mitte, on to the Mäusebunker in Lichterfelde and finally out to the Rieselfeldern in Gatow.

The results and cores of these investigations are now being incorporated into a theatrical film: The ballroom of the Sophiensæle is transformed into an installation between film set and surround theater. The cast shamelessly appropriates allegories, emblems, dances, texts, and sounds of the Baroque period, and through them allows their own diverse portraits to emerge between transience and lust for life. And gradually a baroque ball unfolds to live baroque music accompanied by electrosamples.

Director JÖRG LUKAS MATTHAEI specializes in interventions in urban landscapes. Based on documentary research on various topics, his productions create dense thematic spaces that can be experienced sensually. For his excursions into different worlds of imagination, Matthaei is always on the lookout for wayward ways of seeing and living that inspire resistance in our smoothed-out world and weaves these into his works in the form of interviews and short lectures. Under the label MATTHAEI & KONSORTEN Jörg Lukas Matthaei works together with artists from different disciplines. Since 2000, almost 50 works of various orientations have been created: From productions for the stage, installations and discourse productions to the development of new formats for urban landscapes, which have been a focus of the work for several years. Stagings by matthaei & konsorten can be encountered in all places that also occur in the lives of their actors or visitors. Recent works include COOP3000 eine neosolidarische concerngründung (Urban Arts Ruhr), BAILE BASSENA (Vienna Festival), URBAN MAGIC (Bangalore) and with the Sophiensæle most recently Im Apparat der Kriege (2014 Sophiensæle + radio version for rbb and others) and Verschwörung der Idioten. Between 2015 and 2016 they regularly presented the Idiotensalon at the Sophiensæle. matthaei-und-konsorten.de
