Dragana Bulut: Membering – Sophiensæle | Independent Theater in Berlin
Dragana Bulut: Membering
Membering invites the audience into a collective practice of repair. Together with the performers they gather around fragments, memories and inherited histories, moving through acts of restoration, therapy and archive – as choreographies for living with what remains.
Departing from a personal family history of loss and war, Dragana Bulut explores social choreographies of grief and repair. Choreography becomes a way of tracing how grief travels across bodies, generations and collective memory over time, and how events we did not experience ourselves can nevertheless become part of what we carry. In this way, Membering is not a performance about overcoming grief, but an invitation to ask how we might carry it together.
In simple words
In Membering, the audience and performers practise repair together. Dragana Bulut tells of war and loss in her family. Membering asks: How does grief pass from one generation to the next? And how can we carry it together?

Dragana Bulut is choreographer, performer, and researcher. She regards the theater as a public forum: a place of social gathering for critical investigation of the various structures and intersections of aesthetics, economics, and emotions. By transposing established formats into theatre frame, she creates performances rooted in the tension between the material and the immaterial realms, between tangibility and affect, to explore the space between reality and fiction. These social choreographies bring to light the, often, overlooked shifting processes that choreograph our behaviors as a society.
