Overtongue
Dance
In English and Brazilian Portuguese

This spring, the Sophiensæle is pleased to be able to catch up with two works from the Tanztage Berlin 2021/2022 programme that could not be presented during the festival in January due to the pandemic: Michelle Moura's Overtongue will be shown from 23 to 27 April. Kiana Rezvani's dance performance Cyber Ghosts will take place on 11 + 12 June 2022.

There is a common idea that what we say expresses our individuality. In her solo Michelle Moura works with ventriloquism to outsmart this logos and give herself up to a preverbal world. A chimerical body moves within sonic dissociations and physical landscapes whose mechanisms can be grotesque. Through misspeaking the performance bespeaks a diversity of voices in an act of its decoupling from the body. As an entity between physis and psyche the voice leaves the body of the performer without quite belonging to her: possessed, perhaps alive, perhaps dead.

The piece lasts 40 minutes and uses English and Brazilian Portuguese spoken language. Knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese is not required for comprehension of the piece though. The audience area on the grandstand is seated and will be rather dark throughout the entire performance. There are two wheelchair spaces and one beanbag seat that can be reserved by phone or booked via the online ticket shop or at the box office, if available. If you require a specific seat, please arrive 20-30 minutes prior to show time and approach our evening staff.

Michelle Moura is Brazilian by birth, currently living in Berlin. For several years she had explored strategies to generate psychological and physical changes in minimal pieces. Nowadays, she adds new layers to her work, interested in artificiality and dissociation of elements, she manipulates movement, expression, sound and speech. Her creations have been presented in international dance and performing arts festivals including Impulstanz (AU), Panorama (BR), HAU – Hebbel am Ufer (DE) and La Biennale di Venezia (IT). As dancer, she has worked with Lea Moro (CH/DE), Wilhelm Groener (DE), Vincent Dupont (FR) among others. She was a co-founder and member of Caulifower Miniglobal Artistic Community (2005 – 2012) together with 7 other Brazilian artists. Her performance Overtongue, which was created as part of Tanztage Berlin 2021, was invited as one of 13 productions to the Tanzplattform Deutschland 2022.
