Since 2021, Sickness Affinity Group (SAG) has organized a regular reading group engaging with critical thinking in queer and crip studies. In these online sessions, SAG generates different points of access by experimenting with alternative approaches to texts and other materials. In their first in-person reading group session Could the journey be more important than the destination?, to be held at Leisure and Pleasure, they will collectively investigate ideas and feelings around different experiences intertwined with walking. The Session will explore the strategies that disabled/sick bodies and other so-called “minorities” apply and invent to reach their destinations, through routes designed and inhabited by “normative” bodies. SAG wants to relate to the materials in terms of experiences, feelings, thoughts, and emotions rather than in a scholarly way, relaying on affect dynamics and exchange among the participants.

Duration
- 2 hours with one break
Language
- The discussion in the Reading Group is in English spoken language.
- There will be whispering translation into German if needed.
- The Reading Group will discuss one video and two texts:
Video: English spoken language with English audio description and German subtitles.
Texts: English and German written language and as audio files in English and German spoken language. - The material discussed in the Reading Group will be send to you via e-mail a couple of days prior to the event. You do not have to engage with the material before the session, it will be shown/read/distributed at the beginning of the session as well.
Light
- There will be an array of colorful fluorescent tube lights on the ceiling in warm tones, in scattered but parallel order, low dimmed.
- They are orange and yellow close to the entrance and purple above the library.
- There will be some bright and dark areas but not direct white light.
Audience
- Suitable from 14 years
- The audience is seated on cushions and pillows distributed on 5 platforms in different heights arranged in an irregular circle.
- There are seating options with backrests.
- The space is wheelchair-accessible.
Relaxed Event
- Visitors can leave and return to the space at any time.
- There is a resting area: A calm, dark, low-scent space with enclosed by curtains which you can open and close. Inside is a platform with a mattress to lay down and some sound shielding elements. There is a heavy blanket and some stimming toys, earplugs, masks, blankets and pillows, and hot water bottles.

- The event takes place with English audio description.
- Reservations are accepted from Monday to Friday via 030 27 89 00 30 or ticketing@sophiensaele.com.saele.com.
- If required, we offer a pick-up service for blind and visually impaired persons from the nearby S-Bahn, U-Bahn and tram stations. These are U-Bahn Weinmeisterstraße, S-Bahn Hackescher Markt or the tram station Weinmeisterstraße/Gipsstraße.
- The pick-up service is available before the Reading Group between 3:15 pm and 3:45 pm.
- Escort back to the tram station is possible up to one hour after the end of the Reading Group.

Sickness Affinity Group (SAG) is a group of art workers and activists who work on the topic of sickness/disability and/or are affected by sickness/disability. Sickness Affinity Group functions as a support group that challenges the competitive and ableist mode of working in the arts by sharing experiences and information and by prioritizing the well-being and access needs of its group members. Sickness Affinity Group investigates accessibility as both a topic and curatorial method. They aim to celebrate and create room for non-normative bodies, politics and desires, as well as offering a supportive environment for fragility and wellbeing. Sickness Affinity Group holds regular meetings in Berlin and maintains an email list. Sickness Affinity Group members collaborate on projects in small working groups and report back from their process in the bi-monthly meetings.
