Homecooking
Homecooking
Simone Dede Ayivi and accomplices fire up the stove. They have met to cook and have collected recipes, shopping lists and entire kitchens. All this with the accompanying stories about family connections and processes of detachment, culinary integration compulsion, fake fufu, the hummus paradox and Köfte exoticism. Together with the audience, they position themselves vis-à-vis the German aversion to caraway and garlic, hack the potato system and open a barrel or two more. They present hard-to-digest fare as light fare and look into each other's pots. Together they write the theatrical cookbook of our culinary migration heritage and ask: What will we cook tomorrow?
In Homecooking, Simone Dede Ayivi takes the stage as a performer in the kitchens. In video and audio pieces, people from different communities, generations and places share their stories and recipes.
The piece lasts 70 minutes. It is mainly in German spoken language. A smoke machine is used as well as strobe lights for short periods. There will be live cooking on stage. Experiences of fleeing and violence are thematized. It is possible to leave the room and return during the show. Seating options are chairs, stools and beanbags. The beanbags and the two wheelchair spaces can be reserved by phone or booked via the online ticket shop or at the box office, if available. If you require specific seating of any other kind, please arrive 20-30 minutes prior to show time and approach our evening staff. If you have any questions or need further information, please contact Gina Jeske at jeske@sophiensaele.com or 030 27 89 00 35.

Simone Dede Ayivi's performances discuss questions of representation, resistance and community. Her works are biographically motivated, mostly interview-based research projects. She explores ways of remembering and rediscovering - and shines a spotlight on political struggles and movements, Black history and the present. Using recorded discussions, interviews and political speeches, she seeks to amplify the voices of marginalized communities. With Afrofuturistic narratives, she creates a space in the theater to ponder, translate and reinvent. A space for utopias. Simone reveals her research methods and the means of theater, allowing the audience to become part of her content-related and aesthetic search process. The construction of images is also addressed and viewing habits are questioned. Together with her Kompliz*innen, she has developed performances in cooperation with the Sophiensæle, the Pavillon Hannover, the Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt and the Festival Theaterformen. She has worked as a director at Schauspielhaus Graz, Theater Oberhausen and Deutsches Theater Berlin, among others. In 2022, Simone Dede Ayivi received the Tabori Award from the Fonds Darstellende Künste.
