When are we allowed to just hang around? When is leisure not a luxury, but a right?
As part of the International Performance Festival Never Work, we invite you to the launch of the second issue of our anniversary publication Sophiensæle Forever – Never Work. The publication brings together voices that examine the relationship between art, work, and exhaustion from different angles: Simone Dede Ayivi asks who is actually allowed to just hang around. Emma Holten shows why a system based on market prices fundamentally fails to capture the value of art and care work – and makes a case for new alliances between artists, care workers, and activists. Anka Herbut and Kasia Wolińska pose the most radical question of all: What if we don't reform the system, but refuse it entirely?
To mark the launch, Simone Dede Ayivi will read from her text Hanging Around, followed by a conversation about work, exhaustion, and the political dimension of free time. We will talk about how our own stress levels distort the way we see others – and how the ability to be generous fades the harder we grind. Simone Dede Ayivi's conclusion is both provocative and precise: cutting arts funding means cutting the very conditions that enable people to experience art in the first place. Because art needs more than a gap in the calendar – it needs mental breathing room.

Simone Dede Ayivis Performances erörtern Fragen von Repräsentation, Widerstand und Community. Ihre Arbeiten sind biografisch motivierte, meist interviewbasierte Rechercheprojekte. Sie beschreitet Wege des Erinnerns und Wiederfindens – und rückt politische Kämpfe und Bewegungen, Schwarze Geschichte und Gegenwart ins Scheinwerferlicht. Durch die Verwendung von aufgezeichneten Gesprächsrunden, Interviews und politischen Redebeiträgen, versucht sie die Stimmen marginalisierter Communities zu verstärken. Mit afrofuturistischen Erzählungen schafft sie im Theater einen Raum zum Grübeln, Übersetzen und neu Erfinden. Einen Raum für Utopien. Dede Ayivi legt ihre Recherchemethoden und die Mittel des Theaters offen und lässt so das Publikum Teil ihres inhaltlichen und ästhetischen Suchprozesses werden. Dabei wird auch die Konstruktion von Bildern thematisiert und Sehgewohnheiten hinterfragt. Mit ihren Kompliz*innen entwickelte sie Performances in Kooperation mit den Sophiensælen, dem Pavillon Hannover, dem Künstlerhaus Mousonturm Frankfurt, sowie dem Festival Theaterformen. Als Regisseurin war sie unter anderem am Schauspielhaus Graz und dem Theater Oberhausen, am Deutschen Theater Berlin tätig. 2022 erhielt Simone Dede Ayivi die Tabori-Auszeichnung des Fonds Darstellende Künste. 2025 ist Simone Dede Ayivi & Komplizinnen mit Autsch – Warum geht es mir so dreckig? eingeladen zum Impulse Festival für Performance, Theater & Tanz.
