15.02., 16:30 | Talk: Encounters at Sea: Transformations

With: Elliott Cennetoglu (artist, light designer, acupuncturist and writes, among other things, about the pregnancy experience as a non-binary trans* person) and Esther Kogelboom (editor in chief at Tagesspiegel, co-founder of the Tagesspiegel podcast Gyncast, co-author of Das Große GYN-Buch, 2024)

“There can be a perverse pleasure as well as a sense of rightness and beauty, in insisting on flowering just when the world expects you to become quiet and diminish.”
– Sharon Blackie, Hagitude, 2023

What does it mean to age as a woman in a time when the pursuit of eternal youth has become a cultural norm? While most people aspire to live to an old age, in Western societies it is often only viewed positively when it appears youthful.

What does it mean to navigate this tension between societal expectations and biological transformations? As cis and trans* women, the four performers offer different perspectives on the visibility of femininity and the shifting self- and external perceptions of their bodies at different stages of their lives. On a stage oscillating between laboratory, anatomical theater, and art installation, they interweave historical and personal stories, sound collages, and movement. Delving deeply into cultural and medical history, they explore how closely their experiences are linked to the society in which they age.

Turn The P/Age shines a light on the cultural dialogue surrounding ageing, women’s health, and medical history, challenging prevailing stereotypes to profoundly shake up our perspectives.
