Workshop: Ikebana – Japanese art of flower arranging

Ikebana arrangement in an arc-shaped black vase: spiky pink-white blossoms and dark red leaves on the left, a white dahlia bloom with dark red and green leaves on the right. Light background.

The workshop introduces the basics of Ikebana—the Japanese art of flower arranging. Using seasonal flowers, participants will create their own arrangements while exploring self-expression through form, balance and space. Ikebana is not only about creating something beautiful, but also about a quiet dialogue with nature. The workshop is led by Sumi, a Berlin-based Japanese Ikebana practitioner.

Drawing on the history of Sophiensæle as the former Berlin Craftsmen’s Association building, the workshop connects craftsmanship and artistic practice. Through working together, participants engage with attention, material, reproduction, and the possibility of exploring different rhythms and forms of togetherness.

All materials will be provided.

Vases by a local ceramic artist selected by Sumi will be used during the workshop, and Japanese kenzan will be available for purchase afterwards.

No prior experience required.
