*INTERAKTIV*

A non-visual dance piece about racism, resilience and community building.

Racism affects everyone, no matter if you are doing, ignoring, avoiding, not recognizing, or experiencing discriminatory events. Worn and Felt is a non-visual dance piece that gives space to the emotional implications of this fact. Through direct physical contact with five dancers, the audience is invited to expose themselves to feelings of shame, fear, and anger. As has been recorded by May Ayim, Audre Lorde, Katharina Oguntoye, and Dr. Amma Yeboah, black people are taught, or rather must learn, to deal with rejection in order to exist. By following this model of black feminist theory, diving deeply into this emotional landscape becomes a departure point to arrive at (re-)empowerment, building community, and gathering energy for activism. Our feelings are our most genuine paths to knowledge. ... We must examine them for new ways of understanding our experiences. This is how new visions begin. (Audre Lorde)

Zwoisy Mears-Clarke is a choreographer of the encounter. His personal immigration background –  from Jamaica to the U.S. and then to Germany – sensitized him to the many social structures that fracture and alienate people from one another. Zwoisy uses the expanded potentiality of the choreographic space to confront the forms of oppression that sabotage human interaction both structurally and interpersonally. Through dance, he desires to open encounters that might otherwise seem closed. His development as an artist has been guided largely by Mary Cochran, Anna Mülter, Gabi Beier, and Rike Flämig.
