22.11., after the show: Artist talk

Cast Away is Hollywood canon: FedEx controller Chuck, who rushes parcel couriers around the area, is stranded on an island with a few parcels after a plane crash. To keep himself from going mad in solitude, he talks to himself using a volleyball he calls Wilson. The volleyball became a pop culture icon overnight. It was carried across red carpets and answered questions from the media on its behalf.

In Cast Away – Die Antwort, Wilson will now speak for itself for the first time: “Up the stairs, down the stairs. Up to 200 times a day.” This is the pace of work that parcel delivery workers often perform for more than ten hours a day, six days a week. Markus&Markus Theaterkollektiv turn the Kantine into a parcel distribution center and give Wilson the voice of those who are being bossed around by Chuck. With them, they create Wilson and thus give the narrative a dramatic answer.

They never ring the doorbell! They just drop a note in the mailbox – if that! Or they ring every doorbell. And then they drop a note in the mailbox. They drop the package off at the parcel shop on the other side of town! Even though I was home!

Markus&Markus is a theater collective that was founded in 2011 by students of scenic arts in Hildesheim. The group consists of Lara-Joy Bues, Katarina Eckold, Markus Schäfer and Markus Schmans. All four develop the works together and collaboratively - from the concept idea to the research/shooting phase to the development of the individual building blocks such as text, music and scenic realization. There are also specializations: Lara-Joy Bues and Markus Schäfer take care of organizational matters in addition to their artistic work. Katarina Eckold is responsible for the video. Markus Schmans and Markus Schäfer present the work on stage. Together, the collective stands for a unique form of documentary theater and passionate investigation.

The works are characterized by intensive research, the results of which, captured on video, form an elementary component of the productions. However, the collective is not interested in documenting reality and explaining the world - instead, the theater context is crucial for accessing reality.
