Fatima Moumouni:
Die Neue Unsicherheit – Berlin Edition with Fatma Aydemir & LEGION SEVEN

A person stands on a lit stage in front of an audience, holding a sheet of paper in one hand while extending the other openly into the space. Colored stage lights hang overhead, and two heart-shaped light objects glow to the side.

In this talk series, the aim is not to train people out of saying “um...” – it is actively sought! What does a safer space for uncertainty look like? Is that possible on stage? Zurich artist Fatima Moumouni will be a guest at Sophiensæle in February as a Freischwimmen resident, presenting her talk series Die Neue Unsicherheit (The New Uncertainty), which she has been curating in Zurich since 2020.  Moments of conversation that are allowed to be thoughtful, self-critical, and unreservedly insecure are brought to the stage – guests and moderator are equally unsettled and neither is token nor messiah. Just communal reflection – because when it comes to progressive discourse, there is still much to think about – almost by definition – beyond the pitiful question of WHAT ARE YOU EVEN ALLOWED TO SAY THESE DAYS?

In the Berlin edition of her series, Fatima Moumouni will talk to writer Fatma Aydemir about writing and being in the public eye, about feelings of responsibility, polarization, and artistic freedom – and about Toni Morisson’s quote, which has become a mantra for artists: There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal. But where to put one’s own hopelessness, fear, and need to process when the world is burning?

The conversation will be framed by performances by storyteller and musician LEGION SEVEN. Following the conversation, there will be a hangout with a playlist curated by LEGION SEVEN of specially purchased (not streamed) music from friends, lovers, comrades making music – no matter what. The audience is invited to stay in the space and let the conversation come to a close together.

Fatma Aydemir is a writer and columnist for the British daily newspaper The Guardian. Her novels Ellbogen (2017) and Dschinns (2022) have won multiple awards and been adapted for other media. Her play Doktormutter Faust premiered in 2023. She is co-editor of the literary magazine Delfi.

LEGION SEVEN (*1993 in Brampton, Canada) is a storyteller. Their work is a vehicle in refractive departure from the biblical cult rigidity into which they were born. The wreckage of this rigidity, strewn with dream-mythology, science-fiction, chaos-logic and exuberant lies, lays the path on which Seven gains momentum and puts momentum on display. Winner of the 2018 Basler Medienkunstpreis and 2019 Basel Kulturförderpreis.
