House stories – Sophiensæle | Independent Theater in Berlin

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Sophien-Säle (historical spelling) in what was then the Craftsmen’s Association House were already being used for art and cultural events. From the 1920s onward, the space increasingly served as an organisational site for left-wing political movements. Various groups and associations involved in labour struggles also gathered in these rooms. Following the historical tour of the building, we will return to these stories in our “house histories” in order to discuss where and how strike and protest organisation takes place today. Together with actors from the independent performing arts scene and representatives of the Berlin Hospital Movement, we would like to come together over soup and bread and enter into conversation: about fighting for fairer working conditions and forms of solidarity – across sectors.

Our guests are theatre maker, writer and activist Simone Dede Ayivi; Ciglia Gadola from the Federal Association of Independent Performing Arts (BFDK) and D.R.A.G.; as well as Olaf Berndt and Kamila Weiß from the Berlin Hospital Movement.
