Politics of Love #7

Politics of Love #7
Lecture
Auf Deutsch - in German

The Queer Darlings edition of the discussion series is dedicated to current queer strategies of staging race. Like gender, race is a social construct beyond biological realities and can be regarded as a performative phenomenon: Both identities are anything but stable, emerge through repetitive acts, and need the supposed “other” for demarcation. Nevertheless, the category of race is less fluid and the appropriation of new identities is mainly thought of from the perspective of the white dominant culture. BEING PINK AIN’T EASY and Beige B*tch examine the staging of race in pop culture: What role does it play in the market-driven performance of masculinity and femininity? And, how can power relations based on processes of othering be irritated?
