Accompanying the May 25-27 performances of The Ecstatic, the dancers from Johannesburg's Impilo Mapantsula Dance Company will offer a pantsula dance workshop for amateurs and professionals.

The powerful dance pantsula (translated roughly as “waddle like a duck”) is known for its complex rhythms and virtuos, fast footwork and is part of a subculture that emerged during Apartheid in the townships of Johannesburg. It is still a political dance style that conveys an attitude to life for many young people in the townships and is a symbol of political and personal freedom. The sound of feet stomping on the floor, whistles and voices form the classic “a capella” soundtrack of the dance. It takes elements of tradi-tional South African dances and combines them with elements of clowning, acrobatics and every-day scenes.

The workshop includes a warm-up, an introduction to the dance and its meaning as well as a small choreographic exercise. It is suitable for all levels of prior experience and ages and all movements can easily be adapted to individual needs.
