The three-part publication Sophiensæle Forever takes a triple anniversary – of the building, the theater, and Tanztage Berlin – as its starting point for reflecting on the (im)material conditions of artistic production. We know that art is labor. And yet the myth that a love of art is motivation enough persists to this day. It is felt most acutely by those who work with few resources and with their own bodies as material and medium: emerging choreographers, to whom Tanztage has offered a stage for 30 years. The first part of this series is devoted to precisely this position.

The second part was published on the occasion of this year’s international performance festival Never Work. While today’s world of work demands ever more of us, it offers ever less of the social identity and stability it once promised. Yet the vision of a society in which survival no longer depends on wage labor still seems a distant utopia.

The third and final part was released to coincide with the premiere of Nestervals Eldorado, an immersive theater piece about defiant queer spaces and communities in Berlin-Mitte in the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s – and about their displacement, persecution, and annihilation under National Socialism. Berlin is not alone in seeing austerity measures, gentrification, and anti-democratic movements once again displacing, endangering, or at the very least precaritizing queer spaces and people. The texts collected in the third volume explore queer and diasporic cultural history across centuries and continents – and take a look at the material conditions that give rise to cultural diversity.
