Irena Z. Tomažin & Jule Flierl
Irena Z. Tomažin is a dancer, experimental singer and philosopher who works in the experimental dance and music context. Her work has been analyzed by Bojana Kunst (The Voice of the Dancer) and Sophie Herr (Geste de la voix et théatre du corps), among others, while her writings on voice philosophy have been published in various art publications. Tomažin has already released three albums, Crying Games, Taste of Silence and Lump in the Throat. Her work is a consistent exploration of the non-linguistic voice as a medium in physical performances. She has worked with Janez Janša, Tino Seghal, Mala Kline, Christian Kesten and Josephine Evrad, among others. Tomažin teaches at the workshop series The World is Sound in Berlin.
Jule Flierl is a dance and voice artist from Berlin. She develops choreographies that understand the voice as part of dance and translate movement into the auditory realm, unsettling the relationship between seeing and hearing. She revives the legacy of Valeska Gert, an avant-garde dancer from Berlin in the 1920s, who was the first to coin the term “TonTanz”: Dancing with the voice. She collaborates in various formats with choreographer Antonia Baehr and TonTanz artist Irena Z. Tomažin. 2023 saw the premiere of the quartet Time out of Joint, which deals with the voice as a battleground for political representation.
